Advantages of Medical Lyophilizer

Freeze drying also called lyophilization, is a low temperature dehydration process that used to treat heat sensitive products. The technology has now become a standard practice in many pharmaceutical manufacturers. Because it gently dries products without ruin their chemical and physical properties.

Preserve chemical properties

Unlike heat-based drying methods, freeze drying uses low temperatures and processes called sublimation and desorption to vaporize water. It avoids too much heat to protect product integrity, this doesn't affect chemical properties.

Preserve biological activity

For the pharmaceuticals industry, where many products and specimens are delicate, unstable and heat-sensitive, this preservation technique is ideal. Typically freeze drying ensures biological activity >90%.

Easy to store and transport

Freeze dried pharmaceuticals moisture contain <3%, which means they are suitable for storage and transport at room temperature for long periods of time. Adding water is all that's needed to reconstitute the product. The capacity to stabilize products and increase the shelf life of drugs and medications makes freeze drying one of the most widely used techniques in the pharmaceutical industry. It is said that freeze dried pharmacy can last at least 5 years and up to 30 years.

How Does Medical Lyophilizer Work?

Safety Issues That Must Be Paid Attention to During the Temperature Adjustment of Medical Lyophilizer

For the temperature adjustment equipment commonly used in various operation projects, it is very important to pay attention to safety issues first, because this affects whether the equipment can have a safe operation result. Be careful during daily operation. Let's take a look at the safety issues that must be paid attention to during the temperature adjustment of freeze-drying equipment.
During the temperature adjustment period of the freeze dryer, the first thing to pay attention to is the implementation of the application method, followed by the attention to the details in the temperature adjustment process.

1. In order to add a refrigeration branch circuit that can provide appropriate cooling capacity next to the refrigeration system pipeline that supplies cooling to the front chamer of the freeze dryer under the premise that the cooling capacity of the refrigeration compressor is sufficient to meet the cooling capacity requirements during temperature adjustment.
2. When adjusting the temperature, the refrigeration compressor is supplying cooling to two evaporators with different evaporation temperatures. The difference in working conditions may cause a large impact on the refrigeration compressor due to the lag of the expansion valve control. In severe cases, it may cause refrigeration.
3. The hydraulic shock of the compressor caused the failure, which requires a good control of the return steam pressure. The current technicians have added an electromagnetic valve to the return steam pipeline of the front box evaporator, and the pressure difference between the front and rear of the electromagnetic valve is controlled by the pressure controller. Monitoring to control the opening or closing of the valve to reduce the load impact during temperature adjustment and ensure the smooth operation of the compressor.
4. In order to prevent the pressure in the front chamber evaporator from rising due to the closing of the electromagnetic valve, and the temperature adjustment effect cannot be guaranteed, the technicians added a steam return branch to the steam return line in front of the electromagnetic valve, which is connected to the suction pipe of the two-stage compression of the refrigeration compressor, through practice on multiple freeze dryers, proved that this treatment plan is feasible, it can not only avoid the increase in the cost of adding a temperature adjustment unit, but also solve the current problem. The commonly used capillary temperature adjustment results in unsatisfactory temperature adjustment effect and load impact on the compressor.
For these details of the freeze dryer when adjusting the temperature, it is necessary to attract the attention of every operation operator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often do you need to defrost a freeze dryer?

A: You can learn to gauge the frost buildup and defrost every two or three cycles.

Q: What temperature should a freeze dryer be set at?

A: Freeze Dryer is designed to work in a wide variety of temperatures, but extreme heat and cold will affect performance. The recommended temperature range for operation is 35-90 degrees Fahrenheit. The most efficient temperature range is between 45-75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q: What is the purpose of Lyophilizer?

A: A lyophilizer executes a water removal process typically used to preserve perishable materials, to extend shelf life or make the material more convenient for transport. Lyophilizers work by freezing the material, then reducing the pressure and adding heat to allow the frozen water in the material to sublimate.

Q: What are examples of Lyophilizer?

A: Examples of lyophilized biological products include many vaccines such as live measles virus vaccine, typhoid vaccine, and meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine groups A and C combined.

Q: What does it mean when a drug is lyophilized?

A: Lyophilization or freeze drying is a process in which water is removed from a product after it is frozen and placed under a vacuum, allowing the ice to change directly from solid to vapor without passing through a liquid phase.

Q: How long does it take to lyophilize?

A: It typically takes between 20 to 40 hours to complete the process. Food type and quantity will affect the freeze-dry cycle.

Q: Can lyophilizer remove DMSO?

A: To remove DMSO, a common method is to wash with water and extract with a lower boiling point organic solvent like DCM1. Other methods involve freeze drying (lyophilization) after water dilution or solid phase extraction (SPE).

Q: Can bacteria survive lyophilization?

A: Although lyophilization reduces the bacterial population in plasma, some species survive for several months.

Q: What are the three stages of lyophilization?

A: Various important steps involved in lyophilization process which start from sample preparation followed by freezing, primary drying and secondary drying, to obtain the final dried product with desired moisture content.

Q: How long does lyophilization last?

A: The majority of laboratory samples will lyophilize in 24 to 48 hours but there are certainly exceptions. The freeze drying process is dependent on a variety of factors that determine the amount of time the freeze drying process requires.

Q: What are the principles of lyophilizer?

A: This process is conducted over a range of subambient to elevated temperatures and a range of subatmospheric pressures. The three principal parts of the process-freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying-are conducted at different combinations of these temperatures and pressures.

Q: What is the protocol for lyophilization?

A: The lyophilization process involves three steps; freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying. In the first step, a frozen matrix is formed wherein water is converted into ice crystals leaving behind solutes in the interstitial spaces.

Q: Can you Lyophilize alcohol?

A: Unless you're using a liquid nitrogen lyophilizer, freeze drying a sample in pure ethanol would be impossible. In fact, just freezing pure ethanol is difficult. If you dilute ethanol with water, you can raise the sample's eutectic temperature to a point that it could be lyophilized using a -105˚C freeze dryer.

Q: Can you Lyophilize blood?

A: One recognized and attractive alternative to long-term storage of RBCs by freezing is to freeze-dry (lyophilize) them, yielding a dry RBC product (freeze-dried RBCs).

Q: What is the difference between lyophilization and dehydration?

A: The main difference between freeze drying and dehydrating is the shelf life of the finished product and the consistency of the finished product. Freeze dried products can have a shelf life of up to 20-25 years, whereas the shelf life of dehydrated foods is more around the 5-15 year mark.

Q: Can you lyophilize from liquid?

A: Lyophilisation, or freeze drying, is a process used in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries to stabilise a product, by initially freezing the liquid state formulation and subsequently removing the water through a series of sublimation and desorption steps.

Q: Does lyophilization remove all water?

A: The vacuum speeds sublimation and the cold condenser provides a surface for the water vapor to adhere and solidify. The condenser also protects the vacuum pump from the water vapor. About 95 percent of the water in the material is removed in this phase.

Q: Are vaccines lyophilized?

A: Lyophilization, or freeze-drying, is a complex process which can be used to stabilize vaccines. During a lyophilization cycle, solvent is removed from the liquid product in manufacturing steps which include freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying.

Q: Can you over lyophilize?

A: It depends on the nature of your sample. Protein might go through denaturation with an excessive lyophilization process especially the concentrated protein solution.

Q: Why is Lyophilizer used?

A: By removing the need to dehydrate by heating, lyophilization provides a convenient and safe method for long-term storage of lab samples and pharmaceutical products while preserving their activity.
