There are several different methods can be used while treating the soil sample. For example, drying by fire is one of the common ways drying the soil, it vaporize the water molecule inside soil. High temperature is involved in the process, which causes damage in sample’s particle structure and feature.
On the contrary, lyophilization is the sublimation of water molecule, under low temperature and pressure environment, sample’s physical structure are barely affected.

Under vacuum environment, water molecules converts to gas directly from solid. It has no affection towards sample’s chemical and physical properties. After the sample of soil is dried, moisture content reaches a low level, which is less than 5%. Minimum of the level could even reach 0.01%, also, after being dried, the sample becomes crispy, which all makes the later investigation can be easily conducted.
Comparing to other ways of drying, freeze drying is an more effective way. People do not need to be involved in the process, freeze dryer can be used to make hundreds of soil samples a day. One machine would be enough for processing the sample.
Some of the common questions may occur during the soil-drying process:
1. How to choose the suitable equipment?
The temperature of cold trap should be low enough(less than 60 degrees), the capacity of water catching needs to be good . While conducting the environment, sublimate in the cold trap would prevent moisture loss.
2. How to deal with the dust produced during the freeze drying process?
Dust produced by freeze dried soil are more likely to be pumped in vacuum pump, that would cause damage to the freeze dryer. In order to avoid this situation, filter paper or aluminum foil can be used to pack sample. Also, while purchasing the freeze dryer, filter equipment can be provided by manufactures.
